Cold Fire for the Racing Industry
Cold Fire is an advanced wetting agent that is perfect for the racing industry, able to quickly and cleanly extinguish everything from tires to methanol to magnesium. It is UL rated (2N75), EPA SNAP-listed, completely non-toxic, non-corrosive and non-slip. It is in use at racetracks around the country, including Indianopolis Motor Speedway, Charlotte Motor Speedway, Watkins Glen and many others. It is used by teams and tracks for IRL, NHRA, IHRA, DIRT and IMSA, among others.
Cold Fire helped save the life of Andy Hillenburg on April 3rd, 2000 at Texas Motor Speedway, when his Number 2 Luxaire J&J hit the berm and a brake rotor punctured the fuel cell, which started a fire.
Below, a pitcrew member sprays Cold Fire from a hand held extinguisher after refueling.
Below is dramatic footage from May 2009 Indy 500. No. 14 Vitor Meira’s car has an ethanol spill that threatens to engulf the entire car. The pit crew and Delphi Safety Team douses the fire with Cold Fire, and the flames are out in seconds – and Meira is back on the track!
Cold Fire and its use within the motorized racing industry has been growing rapidly. More and more tracks are using Cold Fire due to its extraordinary fire fighting capability, unique cooling effect, and because it is non-toxic and non-corrosive. Cold Fire provides enhanced safety to the driver. The NHRA has even specified its use in onboard suppression systems (9:3).
“For all other vehicles, onboard fire extinguisher systems must be manually controlled Cold Fire 302 … and mounted per manufactuere’s specifications with the primary nozzle(s) directed in an attempt to protect the driver.”
Unlike old-fashioned AFFF foam, Cold Fire is completely non-corrosive and has an indefinite shelf life. You can put it in a 1.5 or 2.5 gallon extinguisher, or in the water tank of your crash truck and forget about it. It will never gel, crystalize, separate or corrode the metal. RDR offers even smaller 2,3 and 4 liter fire extinguishers with fixed nozzles. It ca even be used in closed loop suppression/sprinkler systems.
Cold Fire puts out both hydrocarbon (gas, diesel, crude) AND polar solvent (ethanol, methanol) fires. In the case of a methanol fire, which can burn without a visible flame, you can spray both the car and driver as a precaution; Cold Fire is non-toxic to the driver, and non-corrosive to the car. When dry it leaves almost no residue. It will actually clean the track where it is sprayed, because it encapsulates the loose hydrocarbons in spilled fuel without damaging the asphalt/tarmac.
